Primetime Misogyny

 In 2000, I began tracking levels of hate speech and bias language on primetime network television. In addition to the data gathered on language, I’ve also tracked changes in attitudes and behaviors based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and bullying.

From the beginning, there was a consistent phenomenon of white and black men literally —and quite physically—acting out their presumed sexual prerogative over black women. If anything, the sexualized objectification has worsened: The extreme pornification of black women in popular culture that I’ve been documenting since 2000 in my media studies shows a steady increase that matches the increasing popularization of the violently misogynist gangsta culture.
